Air Fryer Burgers

Burgers without firing up a grill or smoking out the kitchen. Seasoned patties, a hot basket and a short cook get you a browned exterior and a juicy center. Toast the buns in the leftover heat.

Air Fryer Burgers

Do not smash thin

Patties about 3/4 inch thick cook evenly. Smash-thin burgers overcook before they brown in most air fryers.

Indent the center

A thumbprint in the middle keeps the patty flat as it cooks so it does not puff into a meatball.

Cheese at the end

Add cheese in the last minute so it melts without sliding off into the drawer.

Step-by-step instructions

Follow each step in order. Photos show what to look for so the basket finish matches the plate.

Shape

  1. Gently mix beef with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Form 4 patties about 3/4 inch thick. Press a shallow dent in the center of each.

Cook and build

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Arrange patties in a single layer.

  2. Cook 5 minutes. Flip and cook 3-5 minutes more to your preferred doneness (160°F / 71°C for well-done ground beef).

  3. Top with cheese and cook 1 minute more to melt. Toast buns in the basket 30-60 seconds if you like.

  4. Build burgers with toppings and condiments. Serve immediately.
