Crumbed Air Fried Mushrooms

Breaded mushrooms without a deep fryer. Whole button mushrooms get a flour-egg-panko coat with oregano and garlic powder, then air fry until golden. A quick sour cream dip with chives and lemon finishes the plate.

Crumbed Air Fried Mushrooms

Keep mushrooms dry

Wipe clean with a damp towel instead of soaking in water. Wet mushrooms steam and soften the crumb coat.

Press the crumbs on

Mushrooms are smooth. Press panko firmly so the coating sticks through the flip.

Drizzle oil on the crumbs

A light olive oil drizzle before cooking is what browns panko in the air fryer. Without it the crust stays pale.

Crowding. Single layer only. Overlapping mushrooms steam and the panko stays soft.
Basket liner (optional). Air fryer paper basket liners are optional. They catch drips and make cleanup easier. Use the molded type that fits your basket; air flows around the sides. Never cover the whole basket floor with solid foil.

Step-by-step instructions

Follow each step in order. Photos show what to look for so the basket finish matches the plate.

Bread

  1. Season flour with salt and pepper in one bowl. Beat eggs in a second bowl. Mix panko with garlic powder, oregano, salt and pepper in a third.

  2. Coat each mushroom in flour, then egg, then panko, pressing so the crumbs adhere.

Cook

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (199°C). Arrange mushrooms in a single layer and drizzle with olive oil.

  2. Air fry 10 minutes. Flip and cook 3-5 minutes more until crisp and deep gold.

  3. Stir sour cream, chives, lemon juice and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper. Serve mushrooms hot with the dip.
